Cultural factors help limit recession's impact - USATODAY.com
RALEIGH, N.C. — Until this summer, Loc Tran, 59, was a technician at Nortel, a global communications company that has facilities at Research Triangle Park here. Then she left and opened Pho' Cali, a Vietnamese restaurant. When her brother lost his job at another local electronics company, he didn't become unemployed. He joined the family business. "My brother works here now," Tran says.

Sheep story shows importance of union | IEANEA

Sheep story shows importance of union | IEANEA
It seems to happen with annoying frequency. A letter to the editor, an editorial, or a TV talking head, opines that unions are no longer needed and that public school teachers should not have tenure rights. If people are paying attention to the news out of Piasa, Illinois, maybe we’ll hear a little less of that claptrap for a while. - Charles McBarron

Tenderloin Tessie Holiday Dinners - Feeding the Hungry in San Francisco for Over 30 Years!

Tenderloin Tessie Holiday Dinners - Feeding the Hungry in San Francisco for Over 30 Years!
For over 30 years, Tenderloin Tessie Holiday Dinners, an all-volunteer organization, has fed the community of San Francisco on Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. We work hard to prepare a hot dinner in a welcoming environment. We serve the elderly, disabled, low income, homeless families with children and those that do not have a family or a place to go. Our dinners average a thousand people each holiday and take place at the First Unitarian Church at the corner of Franklin and Geary Streets. Everyone is welcome!

Ya, I know the first diner is in Maine. It's time to move on. We can't keep blaming Cleve Jones and David Mixner for all the resources that were wasted on the National Ego March that should have been used to maintain marriage equality instead.

I've only eaten at one of this diners - Micky's Dining Car in St. Paul (pictured above). I found it because there isn't any other goddamn place to eat in the entire city of St. Paul after the bars close. The food was good and the drunks were inappropriate. Highly recommended. - MDMB

They say a picture's worth a thousand words. For a Kentucky doctor, his newly purchased painting is worth dollars... possibly 250 thousand of them.

Gay leaders blame ads, Obama for loss - More politics- msnbc.com

Gay leaders blame ads, Obama for loss - More politics- msnbc.com
From the article: In Iowa, where the state Supreme Court legalized gay marriage last April, conservatives have no quick way to overturn the ruling. Their only option would be to amend the state constitution through a ballot measure — in 2014 at the earliest — and that effort would need approval from a legislature whose current Democratic leaders don't even want to debate the issue.

Time To Boycott Maine Lobster- After All, God Says Consuming It Is An Abomination - Lez Get Real

Letter of Thanks from Mr. DeLong

The following was posted on the Facebook page Mr. DeLong Is Back:

When my wife read the notice last Monday stating I had been suspended, she said, “What are you going to do, to say?”

I told her, “The only people who can say anything will be my students. They’re the ones who know me best.”

And do you ever. I truly felt understood as I read your posts, your explanations, your past and present experiences in class . . . So many of you would write a comment, and I would think, “They get it. My students get it.” So many others didn’t understand that I wasn’t teaching science any more than a history teacher who uses a novel teaches literary elements. I was using the skills of logic, critical thinking, analysis of writing structure and rhetoric, as I have always done. And all of you who have sat in my classroom got that . . . I guess I would have to say to someone who didn’t understand: “I guess you had to be there.” Because in class, we get it, whether we read an article from science, history, psychology, or religion. We read, we discuss, we analyze and evaluate, and add to the discussion of ideas.

I know many of you said many kind comments about me and your experiences with me over the years, but I want you to know that the student-teacher relationship requires a student as well as a teacher. The teacher teaches nothing without a student willing to learn, to hone his/her skills, until eventually s/he no longer needs the teacher. In that regard, as I read many of your comments, I was reminded of the scene in Star Wars: A New Hope when Obi-Wan and Darth Vader duel. As they come together, Darth Vader says, “When I left you, I was but the learner. Now I am the master.” Indeed, you have taken the tools we honed in class and have used them well. Masters you are, Young Skywalkers.

And you didn’t depend on yourselves alone. You reached out to family, friends, community members, the media, other supporters. And so many people got involved, wanted to assist and add to the discussion. And as the discussion grew, so did the issues . . . it was like sitting in the largest class ever and just watching everyone have a say, work through their perspectives, agree, disagree, nod, wonder.

This week, I felt I was part of something larger than myself. Though I didn’t add one comment, I felt part of those Facebook Groups, and as the movement grew, in some way I grew with it. Difficult to explain, I know; it was an experience unlike anything else . . . but it was mystical, beautiful, in some sense holy.

Descartes said: “I think, therefore I am.”

I would have to say: “You are, therefore I am.”

High school teacher suspended after assigning an article on homosexuality in animals | Psychology Today
Yesterday, Mr. Delong, a 10th and 12th grade Honors English teacher in Piasa, IL was suspended for assigning an article about homosexuality in the animal kingdom to his students. Should teachers ask their students to read about controversial topics? Should we allow parents veto power over the curriculum? - Elizabeth Meyer, Ph.D.

Southern states 'opted-out' of civil rights too

Southern states 'opted-out' of civil rights too
One idea that has found its way into the health care reform debate in Congress is the option to "opt-out" of the public option. It would allow the states to decide whether they want to participate in a government-run health care insurance system. But if we are to believe that health care is a fundamental right, or at least should be, then the opt-out is a bad option. After all, when the southern states decided to opt out of civil rights for African-Americans, it had disastrous consequences.
